Altimeters on airplanes that aren't working cause a lot of problems, Wireless receivers will be regulated by the FCC

The Federal Communications Commission voted overwhelmingly to initiate an investigation into poorly constructed wireless devices that receive signals from frequencies other than those assigned to them. The FCC’s approval of a Notice of Inquiry (NOI) on Thursday could lead to new receiver regulations and is the first major step in the agency’s efforts to avoid future conflicts like the high-profile battle between the aviation and cellular industries, in which a 5G rollout was delayed due to airplane altimeters receiving transmissions from the wrong spectrum band.

“Explore methods for fostering improvements in radio frequency (RF) receiver performance, including using incentives, industry-led voluntary approaches, commission policy and advice, or regulatory requirements,” the FCC added. The investigation will also “collect current information on receiver performance, developments in receiver technology, and potential techniques for supporting the development and use of more interference-resilient receivers while stimulating market innovation.”
